Recognize the duty of care in the transport of dangerous goods
Understand the legal and professional requirements for safe transportation, including their duty to attend training
Understand the hierarchy of safety, prioritizing self, others and the environment
Learn about the training obligations for those involved in dangerous goods transportation, as well as possible exemptions
Understand the general Harmonization System (GHS) and UN model regulations
Identify key international frameworks like IATA, ICAO, IMDG, RID and ADR
Recognize that ADR is an agreement, not a law, but understand the enforceability of the UK’s CDG regulations
Identify employer responsibilities regarding risk assessment
Understand vehicle markings in compliance with regulations
Explain the allocation and purpose of UN numbers and how they relate to shipping names
Gain knowledge of the different classes of dangerous goods (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9), their associated hazards, and understand the need for specialized training for classes 1 and 7
Identify when and why transport categories and packing groups are used, including specific exemptions
Identify potential environmental hazards of dangerous goods, including regulatory requirements for hazardous waste disposal
Understand proper spill management procedures, including the use of spill kits
Identify the causes of incidents and follow correct operating procedures to prevent them
Familiarize with tunnel codes and understand precautions when entering tunnels
Identify the necessary transport documents and equipment needed on the vehicle
Learn about the enforcement agencies and the penalties for non-compliance with ADR regulations
Recognize security risks related to dangerous goods and follow necessary security protocols to prevent terrorist access
Understand the special requirements for transporting high consequence dangerous goods, including the use of load cards and advice sheets
Learn about the different types of PPE, their use, maintenance and limitations
Recognize fire risks, identify the fire triangle and understand fire safety procedures and the correct use of fire extinguishers
Learn about performing CPR, emergency procedures in the event of an incident, and the correct response to injuries or accidents
Learn about the correct reporting procedures and actions to take in the event of an emergency, including reporting incidents accurately, taking appropriate actions and cooperating with emergency services
Understand vehicle maintenance requirements and the actions to take in the event of a breakdown
